DePaul University Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives recently partnered with the Center for Latino Research (CLR) in the acquisition of two collections that are instrumental to telling the Puerto Rican experience. Both collections include valuable materials and interviews that were donated to CLR and have been deposited into Special Collections & Archives’ Latino/Latin America Archives. The Luz Mara Umpierre Collection recognizes the many contributions Luz Mara Umpierre has made to areas of lesbian sexuality, the Puerto Rican immigrant experience, and bilingualism. The Puerto Rican Chicago: The Mirta Ramirez Collection includes a wealth of valuable interviews of more than 35 Puerto Rican community educators, politicians, artists, and activists. The generous donations of Mirta Ramirez and Luz Mara Umpierre have greatly contributed to the Puerto Rican literary and activism history. By watching and listening to the DVDs or by reading the transcriptions we get to know and celebrate the many stories and experiences that make up the histories and accomplishments of Puerto Ricans in Chicago.
