On February 17, James H. Murphy, a professor in the Department of English, will read from his newest book, Irish Novelists and the Victorian Age (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011). The reading and reception, will take place at the John T. Richardson Library, Room 300, from 5:30-6:30 PM.Professor Murphy has had a distinguished record of publication. He has authored four books on Irish history and literature, and edited seven; his eighth edited collection, The Oxford History of the Irish Book: volume 4: the Irish Book in English, 1800-90 is forthcoming later this year.
Oxford University Press describes Murphy’s Irish Novelists and the Victorian Age as offering “the first comprehensive study of the neglected Irish writers of the Victorian age, whose work was highly popular with the British reading audience and therefore disparaged and largely forgotten from the era of W.B. Yeats and the Irish Literary Revival, with its culturally nationalist agenda, onwards.” Drawing on the work of 150 Irish novelists Murphy’s latest book not only engages with themes played out in the novels themselves, but also examines the larger cultural, economic, and often difficult political circumstances in which the novelists lived and worked.
