Former Academic All-American basketball player at Purdue, Dr. Carson Cunningham has been teaching history at DePaul since 2004. Having earned his PhD from Purdue University in 2006, Cunningham authored American Hoops: U.S. Men’s Olympic Basketball from Berlin to Beijing, which the University of Nebraska Press published in December 2009.<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska Press describes American Hoops as offering “a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport” as it examines a variety of historical turns “[f]rom clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the Cold War and technological advances in everything from television to sports equipment off the court.”<\/p>\n

While colored by Cunningham’s own love of the game, the book also draws on years of archival research, including visits to Olympic headquarters, the basketball hall of fame, and even the Soviet archives in Tallinn, Estonia. The book also draws on an array of personal interviews with basketball legends such as Pete Newell, Larry Brown, and John Wooden.\u00a0 Cunningham’s interview with Wooden was born of Cunningham’s creative off court play-making skills. He’d heard that the basketball legend who died at age 100 in 2010 — was a regular at a Los Angeles diner.\u00a0 While in town researching at the ’84 Games Library in Los Angeles, Cunningham stopped by the diner with fingers crossed. He was in luck; Wooden was there. Cunningham felt like he won the gold when the hall-of-famer and fellow Purdue Academic-All-American smiled and told Cunningham to “pull up a chair.”<\/p>\n

On Thursday, May 12, University Libraries will invite you to do the same. From 5:30 to 6:30 PM we will feature Dr. Carson Cunningham in an author reading and reception. Dr. Cunningham will read from and discuss American Hoops at the John T. Richardson Library, Room 400.<\/p>\n
