Linda Morrissett, Director of Libraries, will be retiring after fourteen years at DePaul.\u00a0 Linda came to DePaul in 1997 as the Associate Director for Library Collections and Access Services.\u00a0 For the past nine years Linda has served as the Library Director, a period of time that spans two strategic planning cycles and economic fluctuations that had an impact not only on resources but on staffing university-wide.\u00a0 She has ensured a vital library presence at all DePaul campus sites and a growing online presence with the library website, which is one of the highest-trafficked websites at DePaul.\u00a0 DePaul’s substantial growth in enrollment and its creation of new programs and colleges have necessitated changes in and refocusing of library collections and services.<\/p>\n

Major library initiatives under Linda’s leadership have included the significant expansion of electronic resources in the library’s collection from e-journals and databases to e-books and streaming media (music and video) as well as establishment of an e-reserves system that facilitates the ubiquitous delivery of course reserves materials to students on or off campus.\u00a0 Digitization projects and the creation of an institutional repository are also recent steps to bring some of DePaul’s unique collections online. The growth of library services reflects Vision 2012’s Goal I objective to be a model provider for quality distance learning.\u00a0 Linda initiated the move to online reference models that began with email and have expanded to instant messaging, rapidly gaining in popularity, and even texting.\u00a0 The library facilities have undergone minor changes over the past decade, but with Linda’s direction, the Loop campus library has improved group study space for students and plans are being proposed to bring the Richardson Library into the 21st century with upgraded furnishings and state of the art technology.<\/p>\n

When asked what she was most proud of from her years of service in DePaul’s Libraries, Linda said it would have to be recruiting and retaining highly qualified staff, continuing to move the library forward in sometimes difficult times, and keeping the library’s technology-based services and resources current with trends in academic libraries nationwide.<\/p>\n

And in her own words: “I have seen the DePaul Libraries grow to embrace the opportunities the future has to offer.\u00a0 It has been a difficult decision to fix my retirement at the end of this academic year, since there are many more accomplishments and milestones the library will make and it would be most gratifying to continue to be an active part of that.\u00a0 Yet as I prepare to leave I’m delighted to be able to say that the library is in a very good state for the next university librarian to assume this role.”<\/p>\n
