{"id":407,"date":"2016-02-03T20:20:30","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T20:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/?p=407"},"modified":"2016-02-15T22:38:55","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T22:38:55","slug":"jagmanpublication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2016\/02\/03\/jagmanpublication\/","title":{"rendered":"Providing Open Access to Your Publications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently teamed up with University of Illinois at Chicago librarian <a href=\"http:\/\/researchguides.uic.edu\/dempsey\">Paula Dempsey<\/a> to publish an article in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.jhu.edu\/journals\/portal_libraries_and_the_academy\/\"><em>portal: Libraries and the Academy<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>\u00a0Our article, \u201c\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/works.bepress.com\/heather_jagman\/12\/\">I Felt Like Such a Freshman\u201d: First-Year Students Crossing the Library Threshold<\/a>,\u201d discusses how the students in our sample manifested particular \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/acrl\/sites\/ala.org.acrl\/files\/content\/issues\/infolit\/Framework_ILHE.pdf\">threshold concepts<\/a>\u201d in their development as emerging researchers, and is currently available in <em>portal<\/em>\u2019s January, 2016 issue. At DePaul, current access to <em>portal<\/em> is provided through DePaul University Library\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/an6tq9pg6n.search.serialssolutions.com\/?V=1.0&amp;L=AN6TQ9PG6N&amp;S=AC_T_B&amp;C=portal%20libraries\">Project MUSE premium subscription<\/a>. \u00a0Other providers, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/ezproxy.depaul.edu\/login?qurl=http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/go.php?c=10133921\">ProQuest Education Journals<\/a>, maintain a one year embargo on current content. \u00a0In other words, without access to Project Muse (or an independent subscription), access to our article might require placing an ILLiad request (which, of course, is quicker than waiting for an <a href=\"http:\/\/sparceurope.org\/embargoes\/\">embargo <\/a>to expire) if it weren\u2019t for one key thing:<em> portal <\/em>(and Johns Hopkins University Press) supports the ability of authors to post their manuscripts on the Open Web. I maintain copyright, and have permission to post my article to a personal website or <a href=\"http:\/\/works.bepress.com\/heather_jagman\/\">my Selected Works page<\/a> (which is part DePaul University Library\u2019s institutional repository, <a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/\">Via Sapientiae<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Selected Works not only hosts my content (so I don\u2019t have to), it also provides for search engine optimization (SEO). This ensures that anyone searching for my articles will find them near the very top of a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/?gws_rd=ssl#q=%22I+Felt+Like+Such+a+Freshman%E2%80%9D:+First-Year+Students+Crossing+the+Library+Threshold%22\">Google results<\/a>. \u00a0I also have access to an author dashboard that shows me how many times my articles have been downloaded, and from where. You won\u2019t get that kind of feedback from ProQuest or EBSCO.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-411\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-411 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/Via-300x234.png?resize=300%2C234\" alt=\"Via Sapientiae\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/Via.png?resize=300%2C234&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/Via.png?resize=768%2C600&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/Via.png?w=977&amp;ssl=1 977w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But most importantly, Selected Works provides authors with a simple, easy way to make their research accessible. \u00a0Hosting something in our repository means that a librarian at a small school (who might not have purchased access to <em>portal<\/em> through Project MUSE) can find my research and download it for free. You can watch downloads happening in real time at <a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/readership_map.html#content\">http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/readership_map.html#content<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More and more journals and publishers provide for author hosted content in a system like Selected Works.
