\"DePaul<\/a>Do you teach a course in the First-Year Program? If so, please encourage your students to apply for the Library Research Prize.<\/p>\n

The new Library Research Prize<\/a> honors student work that best demonstrates the effective use of information resources and the application of information literacy skills, described as<\/a> the \u201cset of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.\u201d This prize is being offered in partnership with the First-Year Program Writing Showcase<\/a>, an event that \u201ccelebrates the role of writing and writers in our academic, public, and private lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The intentional pairing of the Library Research Prize with the First-Year Program Writing Showcase emphasizes the strong relationship between research and writing and the Library <\/a>and First-Year Program<\/a>.\u00a0 Information literacy instruction<\/a> is an integral part of the curriculum in First-Year courses such as Chicago Quarter<\/a> and WRD 104<\/a>.\u00a0 As Showcase Coordinator Joyce Miller Bean, Associate Director of First-Year Writing explains,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Library Research Prize seeks to recognize outstanding achievement in student approaches to exploration and experimentation with tools such as research databases, and how students apply critical thinking skills in evaluating the usefulness of their search results. These goals complement goals of the First-Year Programs which include introducing students to different conventions of writing and learning to take a rhetorical stance, and giving students exposure to Chicago’s people, communities, institutions, and system of public transportation.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In addition, both the Library and First-Year Program are critical to DePaul students\u2019 development of transferable skills<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Current DePaul student who submit a researched essay to the First-Year Program Writing Showcase may apply for the Library Research Prize. \u00a0Researched essays written in Spring \u201916, Summer \u201916, Fall \u201916, and Winter \u201917 Quarters for Chicago Quarter<\/a>, Focal Point Seminars<\/a>, Quantitative Reasoning & Technical Literacy<\/a>, or First-Year Writing<\/a> courses are eligible. Entrants will also need to submit a \u2018Research Statement\u2019\u2014a one-page reflection detailing how they conducted their research and what they learned from the process.\u00a0 A $50.00 gift card and certificate will be awarded to up to three entrants whose researched essays and Research Statements best demonstrate the effective use of library information resources and search skills and provide evidence of the decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking approaches taken to resolve research challenges they encountered.\u00a0 The deadline for entries is Wednesday, April 5, 2017 and winners will be honored at the First-Year Program\u2019s Writing Showcase on Wednesday, May 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Cortelyou Commons.<\/p>\n
