{"id":872,"date":"2017-10-17T11:15:42","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T17:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/?p=872"},"modified":"2017-10-17T11:19:20","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T17:19:20","slug":"new-tool-for-searching-the-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2017\/10\/17\/new-tool-for-searching-the-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"New Tool for Searching the Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Searching for, and searching within, library resources has come a long way from the days of physically consulting card catalogs.\u00a0 Today, faculty and students are most likely to start their searches from a keyboard or smartphone rather than on paper.\u00a0 Archival materials haven\u2019t enjoyed this same liberation\u2014often researchers are expected to find and consult paper finding aids for archival collections based on the name of the person or organization who created or gathered the materials.\u00a0 This follows the fundamental archival principle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.archivists.org\/glossary\/terms\/p\/provenance\">provenance<\/a>, or <em>respect des fonds.<\/em> While there are collection-level records (collection name, creator, dates, physical extent, and subject headings) in DePaul\u2019s WorldCat Local and VuFind catalogs, <a href=\"https:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/special-collections\/Pages\/default.aspx\">SPCA<\/a> has also organized archival collections in LibGuides by research topics. This topical organization still requires that researchers to 1) know we exist, 2) know where to look on our website or in LibGuides, and 3) think of their topics in language librarians chose for those topics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/aspacelogo.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-873 size-medium\" title=\"ArchivesSpace logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/aspacelogo.png?resize=300%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ArchivesSpace logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/aspacelogo.png?resize=300%2C76&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/aspacelogo.png?w=403&amp;ssl=1 403w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"http:\/\/archivesspace.org\/\">ArchivesSpace.<\/a>\u00a0 ArchivesSpace is an open-source, web application designed by archivists that promotes searching and discoverability of archival collections.\u00a0 SPCA has migrated nearly 75% our archival <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.depaul.edu\/\">collection level records into ArchivesSpace<\/a> so that researchers can search <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.depaul.edu\/repositories\/resources\">across our collections<\/a> using keywords that search narrative descriptions or <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.depaul.edu\/subjects\">Library of Congress Subject Headings<\/a>, and be linked to similar or related collections. \u00a0Our topical LibGuides presentation has archival collections assigned to <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/CommunityArchives\">Community Archives<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/dpuarchives\">University Archives<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/vincentianstudies\/DRMA\">Vincentian Archives (DeAndreis-Rosati Memorial Archives)<\/a>, but the ArchivesSpace database searches across collections because intellectual curiosity and research questions don\u2019t neatly fall into administrative units.<\/p>\n<p>Savvy researchers can drill down into our collection descriptions and then link to full finding aids, but perhaps more importantly, internet<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-887\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-887\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?resize=327%2C184&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Protest search\" width=\"327\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?resize=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/Protest-slide.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshots from SPCA&#8217;s ArchivesSpace that demonstrate cross-collection searching\u00a0 (click to enlarge).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>keyword searches can also uncover ArchivesSpace records of archival materials held by our Special Collections and Archives. \u00a0Our ArchivesSpace database can be accessed from our <a href=\"https:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/special-collections\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Special Collections and Archives pages<\/a> on the web as well as the <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/az.php\">A-Z Databases &amp; Resources<\/a>.\u00a0 New collection-level records are added on an ongoing basis, and we\u2019ll soon start to build out full descriptions so that keyword searching will mine series and folder level descriptions as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/special-collections\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Special Collections and Archives<\/a>\u00a0is committed to providing students with the opportunity for <a href=\"https:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/services\/library-instruction\/Pages\/spca-instruction.aspx\">active learning<\/a> by engaging with primary sources and archival materials. We hope the addition of ArchivesSpace will help faculty and students discover primary source materials available for their teaching and research.
