On April 25, 2014, DePaul University joined Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) in sponsoring the Illinois Information Literacy Summit. Offered annually since 2002, the Information Literacy Summit provides an opportunity for librarians, teachers and other practitioners across the educational spectrum to come together to share ideas and strengthen information literacy throughout the Midwest. Reflecting the commitment shared by DePaul and MVCC to promote information literacy as a component of lifelong learning, the Summit promotes a unique opportunity for librarians from K-12 schools, public libraries, and academic libraries to come together to share best practices in the design, delivery, and assessment of information literacy instruction.
DePaul librarians Heather Jagman and Jessica Alverson served on the planning committee for the 2014 Information Literacy Summit, which focused on the future of information literacy and highlighted work going on at libraries in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and elsewhere. Over 150 librarians were greeted by a keynote presentation on the evolution of information literacy by Tom Mackey, Dean at the Center for Distance Learning (CDL) at SUNY Empire State College, and Trudi Jacobson, Head of the Information Literacy Department at the University at Albany Libraries and Co-Chair of the Association of College & Research Libraries Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education Task Force. Mackey and Jacobson explored emergent issues in information literacy instruction, as reflected in the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
