ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods: A Unique Opportunity to Build Your Quantitative Research Skills in 2023

If your scholarly resolutions this new year involve leveling up your quantitative research skills and becoming more comfortable with data analysis, you’ll want to read on to learn more about the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods (and the scholarship opportunities available to attend)!

About the Summer Program

ICPSR, or the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, is the leading repository of social science research data in the country. Based at the University of Michigan, ICPSR has been preserving research data and training researchers for over 60 years. If you’re looking for large data sets related to public policy, political science, sociology, education, public health, and more, chances are that ICPSR is a great place to start your search. (DePaul University is a member institution which means that DePaul students, faculty, and staff have access to the full suite of datasets and services offered by the consortium.)

The Summer Program, which launched in 1963, has provided opportunities for over 25,000 researchers to get hands-on experience with statistical methods and data analysis and to build their professional networks. The program consists of two three-week sessions featuring courses on:

  • Data Visualization
  • Network Analysis
  • Regression Analysis
  • Introduction to Time Series Analysis
  • Causal Inference for the Social Sciences
  • Game Theory
  • …and more!

Participants can take up to three courses per session and supplement their learning with a variety of one-off lectures on specific data analysis tools or topics of interest. These programs will be hybrid, held online and in-person at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. There are also one- to two- week long short workshops, many of which can be attended online and asynchronously.

Three-week sessions will be held June 19-July 7, 2023 and July 17-August 4, 2023 and short workshops run May through August 2023.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, consider applying for a scholarship to offset the cost of participation. Over $150,000 of scholarships are available each year and applications are currently being accepted.

There are over 10 different scholarships offered directly by ICPSR, which are open to students (including those graduating in 2023) and early career researchers in the social sciences. A few are also available to current faculty. All scholarships cover registration costs for both three-week sessions and two of the scholarships also provide a stipend to cover living expenses in Ann Arbor.

  • Diversity Scholarship: Open to incoming and continuing graduate students from under-represented groups
  • Warren E. Miller Scholarship: Open to pre-tenure scholars, assistant professors, and students conducting research on electoral/political behavior

Scholarship applications are open through Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Most applications require a current CV, a short cover letter, and two letters of recommendation.

Important Dates

  • Scholarship application deadline: Wednesday, February 1, 2023
