Over the course of the past year, we have welcomed a few new colleagues to the DePaul University Library! To get to know them better, I asked each of them a couple of questions. After getting to know Bryce, Tori, Claire, and Devon, keep an eye out for a second installment of New Faces at the Library where we’ll be featuring several additional members of our team!
When did you start at DePaul? What is your job title and your responsibilities?
Bryce Lucas: I started in September of 2024, so I just celebrated one year at DePaul! I work part-time as the Billing Assistant in Access Services, meaning I mainly help patrons resolve fines and fees on their account.
Tori Carl: I started as the new Evening Circulation supervisor in late August of this year! I work in Access Services, helping to manage our team of student assistants and assist the functioning of the department; additionally, I’m the primary supervisor for our midnight shifts 🙂
Claire Marshall: I started October 7th, 2024. I am the Digital Archivist in Special Collections and Archives, and I manage our born-digital and digitized records.
Devon Rinn Jacobson: I started in August of 2025 as an Access Services Assistant at the John T. Richardson Library. I work the Access Services front desk, assist in supervising student workers, and help out as needed on any projects in the department.
Where were you before joining the DePaul University Library?
Lucas: Prior to starting at DePaul, I had been managing a pair of connected bookstores in Hyde Park (57th Street Books & the Seminary Co-op Bookstore). I started that work in 2016 as a part-time bookseller and, over the course of my tenure, worked in nearly every part of the store, including coursebooks, front-and-backlist buying, and its short-lived podcast.
Claire: Before joining DePaul, I was the Digital Asset Manager at the University of Chicago.
Devon: Before DePaul, I was in undergrad at Beloit College and worked as the InfoDesk Assistant, Interlibrary Loan Assistant, and Archives Assistant for the Col. Robert Morse Library.
What is your favorite hobby or thing to do in Chicago?
Bryce: I, unsurprisingly, love reading and everything connected to books. Beyond that, I watch a lot of soccer (a lot of soccer–I’m watching soccer as I type this) and I go to as many concerts as I can.
Tori: I really love trying out new coffee shops. I’m a big caffeine guy in the first place, and I love a cozy space. My favorite is still The Brewed, a horror themed coffee shop in Logan Square!
Claire: My favorite things to do in Chicago are find new places to eat and walk around and take in all the architecture. I love the seeing the architectural shifts from one neighborhood to another!
Devon: I am still getting to know Chicago, but I definitely am enjoying how much there is to do on any given day. So far, I have been exploring the various live music scenes and have had a lot of fun just checking out all the shows!
What is a favorite book, film, video game, etc. that is available in the Library catalog?
Bryce: I recently read Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo for the first time and thought it was incredible. I wish I had read about it in a library blog post earlier, so trying to do my part to prevent the same happening to you. (The truest answer is that Moby-Dick is my favorite thing and we have myriad versions of the book, film, opera, and inspired poems to choose from).
Tori: Spirited Away! We have a pretty solid selection of Studio Ghibli films, but Spirited Away will always be my favorite.
Claire: I couldn’t say I have a favorite item, necessarily; however, I’m really partial to the Sr. Helen Prejean papers, especially her email inbox, and the St. Vincent’s College, Cape Girardeau records, as those are some of the documents I’ve worked closest with during my time here.
Devon: It’s pretty hard for me to pick a favorite, but I just recently finished Horizon Zero Dawn which the Richardson and Loop Library both have in their video games collections. To pair with the cyberpunk theme, Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro is a book I finished semi-recently and really enjoyed!
Any family or pets you wish to brag about?
Bryce: My parents are ruled by a small dog named Chibi.
Tori: I have two nieces 🙂 Kyoung turned 3 this year, and Char Lee will be 2 in a few months.
Claire: Alas, no pets. But I did earlier this year help rescue a pigeon with a broken wing that I found behind my apartment building.
Devon: My roommate and I adopted an orange Siberian cat named Sunkist almost a year ago! He’s just a big, weird teddy bear who likes being held.
