Stop By and See What’s New in the Library This Year

We were busy this summer refreshing our spaces and collections and preparing to welcome you back for a new year! Stop by the DePaul University Library in person or online to get help from our new staff, browse magazines and newspapers in their new home, borrow new loanable tech items like laptops and gaming consoles, or use new library databases to find e-books, journals, and articles.

New Newspapers & Magazines Collection

Our newspapers and magazines got a new home this summer on the second floor of the John T. Richardson Library. With easy-to-browse shelving and current titles on display, you can now stop by in between classes or whenever you need a study break to flip through the day’s newspaper or recent issues of magazines on a variety of topics from astronomy to poetry, LGBTQ news, and sports. Local media like the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Reader, and Chicago Catholic are all available, alongside plenty of other fun titles. Also, keep an eye out for opportunities to share your suggestions for new subscriptions to add to our growing newspapers and magazines collection.

New Library Databases

We’re excited to share some new and upgraded resources with the DePaul community this year! To see all library databases, click on the A-Z Databases list, and be sure to scroll through the New/Trial Databases list to find these and other new library resources:

Bloomsbury Popular Music Collection – This collection provides access to e-books and encyclopedia entries on popular music around the word. It includes the 33 1/3 series, short books focused on individual albums by artists ranging from Caetano Veloso to Public Enemy, so be sure to stop by if you need sources on Fugazi’s In on the Kill Taker, Patti Smith’s Horses or Koji Kondo’s Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack.

ProQuest One Global Studies & International Relations – This database complements our existing resources to provide even more scholarly journals and articles for analyzing historical and contemporary global issues, such as security, migration, environmental changes and social movements.

ProQuest One Entertainment & Popular Culture – Popular magazines from the past offer valuable insights into social trends, cultural movements and the evolution of entertainment. If you need primary sources on topics from film, television and radio to gaming, comics, music and youth culture, this digital archive will provide access to collections like the Rolling Stone Archive, the World of Archie comics, Twentieth Century Advice Literature, and the Daily Variety Archive.

Applied Gaming Collection – In this collection, you’ll find over 100 e-books including technical titles from specialist imprints CRC Press and Focal Press on topics like audio programming, game physics, interactive storytelling, character animation and level design. A few highlights are Game Design Deep Dive: Platformers and An Architectural Approach to Level Design.

New Loanable Tech

The library is very excited to announce some big changes to our loanable technology collection, including a brand new system for browsing long-term loanable tech items available at both the Richardson Library and the Loop Library. Not only does this system make it much easier to see what items we have and what those items include, it also makes item availability much clearer and allows users to create a booking up to one month in advance. We’ve also expanded the loanable technology collection itself, stocking up on old favorites and making some exciting new addition like multiple new PS5 consoles to boost availability across campuses and a couple of Switch 2 consoles. We now have 10 MacBook Neo laptops with preinstalled applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, & Illustrator. And we’ve nearly doubled the number of phone and laptop chargers at each campus and added other helpful tools such as active noise canceling headphones, presentation clickers, and mini projectors that’ll turn any study room wall into a shared screen!

New Staff

You’ll see new and familiar faces at the Library this year! Librarians Holly Cerney and Mac Martino, who you may recognize from the Richardson Library Research Help Desk, are now based at the Loop Library, where they’ll continue providing research and instruction support to students, faculty, and staff. Also look for A.J. Calabaza at the Loop Library Access Services desk when you stop by to check out a book, borrow headphones, or ask a question. Our new and existing staff are all here to help you succeed this year! Need help? Stop by the Library or get in touch using our Ask a Librarian service.
