But women in jazz, and African American women in particular, have faced discrimination and hostility in pursuit of their art. This year&#8217;s <a class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/smithsonian-jazz\/jazz-appreciation-month\/featured-artist\">Featured Artist<\/a> is pianist, singer, songwriter, storyteller and civil rights activist Nina Simone.<\/p>\n<p>Log in to <a class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/go.openathens.net\/redirector\/depaul.edu?url=http:\/\/search.alexanderstreet.com\/jazz\">Jazz Music Library<\/a> this month to hear the sounds of women in jazz, and take some time to appreciate this uniquely American art form.
