{"id":10362,"date":"2021-05-05T10:25:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T16:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=10362"},"modified":"2021-05-05T09:21:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T15:21:49","slug":"new-digital-exhibit-to-be-free-from-fear-the-berrigan-familys-call-to-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2021\/05\/05\/new-digital-exhibit-to-be-free-from-fear-the-berrigan-familys-call-to-action\/","title":{"rendered":"New Digital Exhibit \u2013 \u201cTo Be Free From Fear\u201d: The Berrigan Family&#8217;s Call To Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DePaul University Special Collections and Archives\u2019 new digital exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/dpuspecialcollections.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/tobefreefromfear\"><em>\u201cTo Be Free From Fear\u201d: The Berrigan Family\u2019s Call To Action<\/em><\/a>, was created to coincide with and commemorate the presentation of the inaugural Berrigan-McAlister Award on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.\u00a0 The exhibit, curated by Jade Ryerson \u201821, Special Collections and Archives Student Assistant, focuses on the values that inspired generations of the Berrigan family to speak out against injustice and war.<\/p>\n<p>Selected documents and photographs reveal notable events in the lives of the Berrigan family including their involvement with racial justice in the 1960s, protests against the Vietnam War, and founding the Plowshares movement in 1980, which opposes the development and stockpile of nuclear weapons.\u00a0 The exhibit\u2019s title comes from a letter dated January 26, 1977, written by Elizabeth (\u201cLiz\u201d) McAlister to her two small ch<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ildren, Frida and Jerome.\u00a0 In the opening sentence of a very short letter she sums up the purpose of her work: <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cTo be free from fear of having all of life vaporized by seemingly reasonable folk \u2013 is what it is all about dear little ones.\u201d<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10363\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/img008-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10363 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/img008.jpg?resize=232%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Letter from Liz McAlister to her children, Frida and Jerome Berrigan, while she was incarcerated. 16px;\">The Berrigan family archives were <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/digicol.lib.depaul.edu\/digital\/collection\/p16106coll4\/id\/21583\/rec\/2\">dedicated and opened for research<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> in March 2001.\u00a0 The Berrigan Library was acquired from Loome Theological Booksellers in 1999 and 2004.\u00a0 Scholars and filmmakers have consulted the Berrigan family archives and related peace activism collections in DePaul\u2019s Special Collections and Archives for their books, articles, and documentaries.\u00a0 DePaul students have analyzed primary sources from the collections in history classes and archivists have collaborated with faculty teaching course<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">s in the Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies program to integrate selected materials into their curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>People are drawn to the primary sources created by the Berrigan family and their network of supporters because they document the power of community rooted in shared values.\u00a0 Their poetry, letters, essays, and photographs echo Phil Berrigan\u2019s message: <em>\u201cPeacemaking is not only a central characteristic of the Gospel, peacemaking is the greatest need of the world today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While we are not currently able to offer in-person research at this time, you can learn
