{"id":10451,"date":"2021-06-14T14:19:03","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T20:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=10451"},"modified":"2021-06-14T15:10:28","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T21:10:28","slug":"introducing-scifinder-n-your-chemistry-information-workhorse-is-getting-an-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2021\/06\/14\/introducing-scifinder-n-your-chemistry-information-workhorse-is-getting-an-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing SciFinder-n\u00a0 (Your Chemistry Information Workhorse is Getting an Upgrade)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it was released by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in 1995, the chemistry and biochemistry information resource commonly known as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/go.openathens.net\/redirector\/depaul.edu?url=https:\/\/scifinder.cas.org\/\">SciFinder<\/a>\u2019 has been the single most versatile and sophisticated tool available for finding, discovering and exploring information on chemical substances (more on the history of CAS and SciFinder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cas.org\/sites\/default\/files\/File%20Library\/Home\/cas_history.pdf\">here<\/a>). You can access SciFinder from several places, including the Library website\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/az.php\">A-Z Databases<\/a> link, and from the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/chemistry\">Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry Research Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To appreciate what SciFinder can offer, it\u2019s worth taking a quick look beneath the \u2018hood.\u2019 There you will find several different searchable databases working together, most notably including SciFinder\u2019s \u2018Registry,\u2019 whose growing population of defined chemical substances is about to reach 150 million (a little over a decade ago, there were \u201conly\u201d 50 million). Other SciFinder database components provide information on chemical reactions, patents, polymers, physical and chemical properties (including spectra), commercial sources, and of course an expanding universe of articles and other scholarly reports and documents (&gt;50 million at the last count).<\/p>\n<p>This almost unbelievable amount of interconnected chemical information is all made accessible through a single <a href=\"https:\/\/go.openathens.net\/redirector\/depaul.edu?url=https:\/\/scifinder.cas.org\/\">SciFinder<\/a> search platform\u2014which offers a variety of discovery and exploration tools and search modes to choose from. For instance, your searches may begin by first drawing or editing the exact or generic structure of one or more molecules, including those involved in a chemical reaction. Alternatively, you might search according a chemical\u2019s role in a reaction, or its particular properties, chemical formula, or its appearance in journal articles, reports or patents.<\/p>\n<p>In step with SciFinder\u2019s rapid growth in size and complexity are the increasing expectations of its users for a quick and intuitive search experience and instantaneous results. Any DePaul chemist from ten or more years ago will remember having to sign up for a session on an earlier client-server-based version \u2018<em>SciFinder Scholar\u2019 <\/em>using one of two dedicated workstations located in a special \u2018Database Room\u2019\u2014mostly hidden behind the Library\u2019s research help desk and kept under lock &amp; key when not in use!<\/p>\n<p>So, you may ask, what additional \u2018leap\u2019 can we now look forward to in this new <em>SciFinder-n<\/em> version? Well, first of all, in case you hadn\u2019t noticed, you already have access! The optional <em>SciFinder-n<\/em> version is linked from the \u201cclassic\u201d version whenever you log in to <a href=\"https:\/\/go.openathens.net\/redirector\/depaul.edu?url=https:\/\/scifinder.cas.org\/\">SciFinder<\/a> through the Library website (screenshot below):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10453 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?resize=640%2C269&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?resize=1024%2C430&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?resize=300%2C126&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?resize=768%2C322&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/scifinder.png?w=1318&amp;ssl=1 1318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After many years of development and testing by CAS, the new <em>SciFinder-n<\/em> version incorporates many enhancements, simplifications, new features, and a more intuitive search and navigation experience, without losing any of the capabilities and content of the earlier version.<\/p>\n<p>By the start of the autumn quarter, 2021, <em>SciFinder-n<\/em> will become the only option available to DePaul users.<\/p>\n<p>We are confident that those already familiar with SciFinder will have little difficulty adapting to the new version\u2019s layout, tools and functionality. However, depending on your familiarity and experience, there may be some need for adjustment.
