College students face many barriers to achieving academic success. While affordable course materials continue to be one of these obstacles, the global adoption and creation of open educational resources (OER) has grown and become an established practice at many institutions. This momentum has, in large part, been driven by financial considerations; however, OER also benefits student learning through the practice of open pedagogy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another barrier for students, but one that may be even more persistent than textbook affordability, is that of inclusivity. Many marginalized students do not see themselves represented in their textbooks and this, of course, impacts their learning. Open pedagogy can address this by allowing faculty to customize open source course materials to reflect their students. Dr. Khadija Al Arkoubi, a Faculty Fellow at the University of New Haven\u2019s Open Pedagogy Project, crystallizes the impact of open pedagogy in the following quotation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, open pedagogy (OP) is a teaching philosophy that puts students at the center of learning and considers them as co-creators of knowledge. It fosters their engagement and recognizes their voices as a way to reinforce inclusivity, innovation, and social justice.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/bit.ly\/3vQLeCj<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
