If you\u2019re anything like me, the seemingly never-ending reading assignments for class can make it hard to pick up a book for leisure, and although winter break is a good time to get back into reading for fun, burnout from the quarter is very real, making even a fun prose book feel like too much work.<\/p>\n

To that I say, \u201cHave you tried graphic novels?\u201d<\/p>\n

Graphic novels are a great way to enjoy a story and engage in the ritual of reading without committing to 200+ pages of pure text. For some, reading graphic novels for the first time may be daunting. I often hear people say, \u201cWell, sometimes I don\u2019t know what order to read things in\u201d and, \u201cThere\u2019s just so much to look at on the page that I get overwhelmed.\u201d These are natural responses when encountering narrative in a new format. Just remember\u2013like with any book\u2013you read left to right, top to bottom, focusing on one panel at a time. It\u2019s also okay to pause for a moment and take in all the artwork on the page. With a little bit of practice, you\u2019ll be whipping through a graphic novel in less time than it would take to watch a movie.<\/p>\n

A misconception I hear a lot is, \u201cReading graphic novels isn\u2019t really reading; you have to read a \u2018normal\u2019 book.\u201d Statements like these aren\u2019t true and delegitimize graphic novels as a valid narrative format. Reading graphic novels is real reading and they offer many benefits, including:<\/p>\n
