Founded by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1858, Barat College began as the Barat Academy for Young Women.\u00a0 In 1904, the school moved to its Lake Forest campus, where it was chartered as a four-year women’s college in 1918.\u00a0 In the 1950s, the Lower School separated from the College and became Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart. The Order of the Sacred Heart turned over control of the college to a secular Board of Trustees in 1969.\u00a0 Throughout the 1970s, Barat developed its emphasis on the arts, including pioneering programs in dance and theater.\u00a0 In 1982, it began admitting male students. In 2001, Barat College formed an educational alliance with DePaul University, becoming Barat College of DePaul University that lasted until 2005 when the school formally closed.Sr. Martha Curry, former Barat faculty member, discusses the Colleges history, legacy, and continuing spirit in her new book. DePaul University’s Special Collections and Archives<\/span> is the repository for the Barat College Archives<\/a>.\u00a0 Although the alliance between the two educational institutions was brief (2001-2005), DePaul University is committed to preserving and providing access to the photographs, documents, publications and memorabilia that were transferred in 2001.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
