From the video game, Plants vs. Zombies<\/em>, to the book, Pride and Predudice and Zombies<\/em>, to the hit series, The Walking Dead<\/em>, zombies seem to be everywhere. It is really quite fitting that zombies have become such a pop culture phenomenon in recent years; with the seemingly endless economic crisis, continuing wars, and of course, 2012 just around the corner, it seems only appropriate to seek some ironic comfort in the walking dead. Ironic or not, zombies constitute a $5 billion+ industry, and as such, it was only a matter of time before academics began publishing on the deeper meanings and social implications of zombie-philia. With Thanksgiving a mere two weeks away, many of you are probably looking forward to spending some time with your family. I, for one, am extremely excited to hang out with my brother, as we usually only get to see each other once a year. Like most siblings, we have a deep-rooted bond that is often difficult for others to understand. As the “longest-lasting relationships” most people have in their lives, siblings have a powerful impact on the others’ development. In his new book, The Sibling Effect<\/em>, Jeffrey Kluger examines birth order, genetic encoding, emotional and behavioral traits, and many other factors, as he explores the complex world of sibling relationships. I occasionally use these blog posts to defend my generation, which has all too often been criticized for being lazy and apathetic. While some of the criticism may be warranted, the so-called “Millennial” generation (those born 1982 \u2013 2003) is filled with a sense of civic idealism and social tolerance that has never been seen before in America. Combined with the unprecedented resources available to them, these qualities put the Millennial generation in a unique position to take the fractured country they inherited and rebuild it for the better. Or, at least that is what Morley Winograd and Michael D. Hais argue in their new book, Millennial Momentum<\/em>. I tend to agree with this argument, or at least with the notion that we have been provided a unique opportunity to fundamentally change the direction our country is headed. “But you don’t have to take my word for it!” (Millennial childhood reference).
