Is it really possible for a &#8216;best restaurant in the world&#8217; to exist? Robert Appelbaum explores these questions, as well as topics such as the emergence of restaurants during the French Revolution and, more recently, restaurants as modern institutions in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/depaul.worldcat.org\/oclc\/670480434\" target=\"_blank\">Dishing it Out: In Search of the Restaurant Experience<\/a><\/em>. In this work, Appelbaum addresses the meaning of restaurants from a social and cultural perspective. To understand the historical significance of restaurants and the roles they play today, one important element he discusses is food writing, beginning with the first food critic, Grimod de la Reyniere, to the current day phenomenon of food blogging. Appelbaum shares many of his own dining experiences to illustrate his arguments, which add a nice personal quality (and flavor) to this work. (Loop Library, 394.12 A6466D)<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/depaul.worldcat.org\/oclc\/540161298\" target=\"_blank\">The Meaning of Cooking<\/a><\/em> focuses on food in the home, with an examination of the family meal in France. Originally published in French as Casseroles, Amours et Crisis in 2005, this translated edition was published in 2010. Kaufmann, a French sociologist and a professor at the Sorbonne, believes that both the preparation and eating of meals help shape our most important relationships (spouses, partners, and children). With that in mind, Kaufmann explores the current dynamics that are significantly changing these two important rituals, such as hectic schedules, electronics (computers, television, and cell phones), and fast food, and the relationship consequences.
