Unlike the syllabus-structured world of college courses, there isn’t a roadmap for navigating the protocols, politics, and culture of an organization or profession. With that in mind, the authors of Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real Job have written a guide that addresses this gap. Emily Bennington and her co-author (and mentor) Skip Lineberg have packed this book full of practical tips and sound advice about the world of work. To stir your interest, here is just a sampling of the many topics discussed: protect yourself against cynics and complainers disease; do feared things first; keep your deadlines realistic; ten things coworkers want you to say; and, don’t be the slug. (Loop Career Information Collection, 650.1 B4728E)

Thinking about pursuing an MBA? One of the first hurdles in the business school application process is writing the essays. Competition for admission to MBA programs can be intense; the essay is an opportunity to stand out from other applicants and showcase experience and abilities. Nedda Gilbert Business School Essays that Made a Difference is a valuable tool that will help demystify the application process. Published by the Princeton Review and now in its 4th edition, this volume presents case studies, constructive examples of essays (both successful and ineffective) from over 10 b-schools, and insightful interviews with students and admissions officers. (Loop Career Information Collection, 650.071173 G4657B)

Graduate students who are pursuing careers in academia have access to information about the process through an array of publications and people (e.g., books, periodicals, blogs, advisors, mentors, seminars, professional associations, and, of course, the Chronicle of Higher Education). But graduate students who are switching gears to look for work in other fields, such as business or government, often come up short when looking for practical guidance (and encouragement) in this process. Jerald Jellison’s Life after Grad School: Getting from A to B provides clear-cut steps and solid advice for making the transition from academia to a different type of organization.
