{"id":1943,"date":"2015-10-31T03:44:37","date_gmt":"2015-10-31T03:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=1943"},"modified":"2017-05-02T09:29:59","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T15:29:59","slug":"day-of-the-dead-and-stan-brakhage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2015\/10\/31\/day-of-the-dead-and-stan-brakhage\/","title":{"rendered":"Day of the Dead and Stan Brakhage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/category\/this-week-in-reference\/\">This Week in Reference<\/a> and Happy Halloween!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Day-of-the-Dead.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1945 size-medium\" title=\"The Day of the Dead\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Day-of-the-Dead-252x300.jpg?resize=252%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Day-of-the-Dead.jpg?resize=252%2C300&amp;ssl=1 252w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Day-of-the-Dead.jpg?resize=860%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 860w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Day-of-the-Dead.jpg?w=1260&amp;ssl=1 1260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve had some very scary questions this week! \u00a0We helped a few students research the <a href=\"http:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-dpu\/Search\/Home?lookfor=day+of+the+dead&amp;type=all&amp;start_over=1&amp;submit=Find&amp;search=new\">Day of the Dead<\/a>\u00a0for an Explore Chicago class. \u00a0Also, it&#8217;s\u00a0very scary to learn that you&#8217;ve already run out of printing\u00a0money for the quarter but you still have <em>so many<\/em> papers to finish\u00a0before classes are over! \u00a0Did you know that you can add more money for printing to your student ID Card through Demon Express? \u00a0We help people find information for research,\u00a0help navigate printing questions, and much much more!<\/p>\n<p>Some of the less spooky research questions coming across our desks this week were about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zen Buddhism<\/li>\n<li>Prison Reform<\/li>\n<li>Shoe Manufacturers<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-dpu\/Search\/Home?lookfor=Stan+Brakhage&amp;type=all&amp;start_over=1&amp;submit=Find&amp;search=new\">Stan Brakhage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And a detailed look at one of our email questions this week:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question<\/strong>:\u00a0I am trying to find information about\u00a0organic food for a compare\/contrast essay. \u00a0Can you help me?<br \/>\n<strong>Answer<\/strong>: \u00a0Yes we can! \u00a0You can find\u00a0different types of information (journal articles, encyclopedias, and links to news\/issues) in the library&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/environmental\">Environmental Sciences &amp; Studies Research Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A great way to begin is to use sources of background information that provide overviews, explanations, terminology and the different aspects of your topic. \u00a0You can find those linked from the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/c.php?g=253514&amp;p=1691354\">Background Info<\/a>&#8221; section of the Research Guide.<\/p>\n<p>You can also find some useful books covering your topic in the library catalog simply searching with the phrase &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-dpu\/Search\/Home?lookfor=organic+foods&amp;type=all&amp;start_over=1&amp;submit=Find\">organic foods<\/a>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, when you&#8217;re ready to search for articles that discuss issues relating to your topic, use the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/c.php?g=253514&amp;p=1691253\">Articles<\/a>&#8221; link on the above Research Guide. Begin by searching in the Academic Search Complete database with the phrase &#8220;organic foods&#8221; in the first search box, then in the adjacent drop-down menu, select &#8216;SU Subject Terms&#8217; before searching.<\/p>\n<p>That will generate more results than it&#8217;s practical to work with, so you&#8217;ll need to identify a secondary concept that you can express in your search using the second of the three search boxes like food labeling or health concerns, or something else. \u00a0Use the background information sources you looked at earlier to help identify words\/phrases that express those secondary concepts.<\/p>\n<p>Remember also you can limit by date of publication, and also limit to scholarly articles using the little check box provided in the left hand column.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/category\/this-week-in-reference\/\">This Week in Reference<\/a>, and don&#8217;t eat too much Halloween Candy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to This Week in Reference and Happy Halloween!
