{"id":3360,"date":"2016-03-24T17:42:22","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T17:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=3360"},"modified":"2017-02-23T13:29:01","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T19:29:01","slug":"reading-chicago-reading-project-funded-by-the-national-endowment-for-the-humanities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2016\/03\/24\/reading-chicago-reading-project-funded-by-the-national-endowment-for-the-humanities\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cReading Chicago Reading\u201d Project Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/divisions\/odh\/grant-news\/announcing-18-digital-humanities-start-grant-awards-march-2016\" target=\"_blank\">announced that it will fund<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dh.depaul.press\/reading-chicago\/\">Reading Chicago Reading: Modeling Texts and Readers in a Public Library System<\/a>\u201d as part of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/grants\/odh\/digital-humanities-start-grants\">Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants<\/a> program. This $74,271 grant will allow faculty from DePaul\u2019s College of Liberal Arts &amp; Social Sciences and College of Computing and Digital Media to collaborate with staff in the DePaul University Library and the Chicago Public Library to explore how readers across the City of Chicago have experienced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chipublib.org\/browse_program\/one-book-one-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Book One Chicago<\/a> (OBOC) program over the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>DePaul University has <a href=\"http:\/\/las.depaul.edu\/academics\/english\/about\/Pages\/one-book-one-chicago.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">collaborated with Chicago Public Library<\/a> for several years on the One Book program by hosting OBOC reading events, public lectures and panels on themes related to the One Book selection, and by offering courses tied to themes explored in One Book selections, including Fall 2015\u2019s \u201cLiterature and Social Engagement\u201d (ENG 378). DePaul is unique among Chicago colleges and universities in terms of the scope of its partnership with Chicago Public Library on the One Book program, and this collaborative research project will extend that partnership even further as we explore the impact on readers and reading across the metropolitan area of CPL\u2019s pioneering One Book program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3427\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3427 size-full\" title=\"National Endowment for the Humanities announces new grant recipients \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0.jpg?resize=640%2C382\" alt=\"general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0.jpg?resize=300%2C179&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/general_grant_recip_announcement_nobrand_0.jpg?resize=768%2C458&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Library staff, including Associate University Librarian Megan Bernal, co-project director for the \u201cReading Chicago Reading\u201d grant, have collaborated with colleagues across the university in recent years to extend the library\u2019s support for digital scholarship at DePaul. Bernal and fellow co-project director <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.depaul.edu\/distinctions\/featured-stories\/Pages\/Digital-Humanities.aspx\">John Shanahan<\/a> (Associate Professor, Department of English; Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts &amp; Social Sciences) were co-instructors for the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2014\/02\/28\/digital-humanities-support-in-the-scholars-lab-the-english-capstone-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas and Carol Dammrich Faculty Innovation Award-winning course, \u201cLiterature in the Age of Intelligent Machines<\/a>\u201d (ENG 390),<a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2014\/05\/13\/enabling-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\"> one of several courses in the digital humanities and data-intensive social sciences<\/a> that have made use of the John T. Richardson Library\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/services\/Pages\/Scholars-Lab.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Scholar\u2019s Lab<\/a> since it opened in Fall 2013.<\/p>\n<p>DePaul University currently offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/las.depaul.edu\/academics\/certificates\/Pages\/digital-humanities-certificate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate Certificate in the Digital Humanities<\/a>, as well as undergraduate programs in related fields such as <a href=\"http:\/\/las.depaul.edu\/academics\/new-media-studies\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">New Media Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/core.depaul.edu\/data-science\/\" target=\"_blank\">Data Science<\/a>.
