{"id":3958,"date":"2016-08-08T14:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T14:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=3958"},"modified":"2016-08-08T18:47:58","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T18:47:58","slug":"international-librarians-come-to-depaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2016\/08\/08\/international-librarians-come-to-depaul\/","title":{"rendered":"International Librarians Come to DePaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/biggerifla.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3965\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/biggerifla.png?resize=156%2C164\" alt=\"biggerifla\" width=\"156\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a>On August 11-12, 2016, almost 100 librarians, archivists, and museum professionals will come to DePaul University from around the world to attend the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 2016 Information Literacy Satellite Conference, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/iflainfolit2016satellite.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Information and Artifactual Literacies: Engaging Minds in Libraries and Museums.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DePaul University Library has been an innovator in information literacy instruction for many years, including instruction for first-year education programs such as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2015\/03\/03\/grant-research-provides-insight-into-first-year-students-library-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Quarter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2015\/10\/05\/what-can-i-expect-my-students-to-know-first-year-library-instruction\/\" target=\"_blank\">WRD 104\/HON 100<\/a>, as well as upper-division programs making use of primary sources for <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2015\/03\/03\/do-you-see-what-i-see-document-analysis-using-special-collections-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\">traditional<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/faculty\/2016\/04\/27\/collaborations-in-digital-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital scholarship<\/a>. More recently, the library has made information literacy instruction a centerpiece of its <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2015\/11\/02\/making-a-real-impact-on-teaching-and-learning-continuing-collaboration-between-depaul-college-prep-and-the-depaul-university-library\/\" target=\"_blank\">K-12 community engagement<\/a> programs and has <a href=\"http:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2016\/02\/01\/depauls-library-and-museum-collaborate-to-extend-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">collaborated with the DePaul Art Museum<\/a> to develop complementary instructional services designed to enhance the impact of collection-centered teaching and learning at DePaul. For these reasons and more, DePaul is an ideal site for an international library conference focused on \u201ccuriosity, critical thinking skills, and the habits of mind that librarians, archivists, and museum educators strive to develop and exercise in their students, researchers, and visitors.\u201d The 2016 IFLA Information Literacy Satellite Conference will feature sessions on \u201cConnecting Schools to Local History,\u201d \u201cUndergraduate Experiential Learning in Special Collections,\u201d \u201cWhat Librarians Can Learn from Museum Educators,\u201d and more. The opening keynote will be given by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/about\/staff\/profile\/1146\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Graslie<\/a>, Chief Curiosity Correspondent at The Field Museum, and co-creator and host of the educational YouTube channel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/thebrainscoop\" target=\"_blank\">The Brain Scoop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifla.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions<\/a> (IFLA) was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1927, and is currently headquartered in The Hague. Its annual World Library and Information Congress is hosted in a different country each year, typically bringing over 3,000 professionals together from libraries, archives, and museums around the world.
