\"stand-up-badge-2\"<\/a>The DePaul University Library, the Writing Center<\/a>, LGBTQA Student Services<\/a>, the Center for Identity, Inclusion and Social Change<\/a> and Office of Multicultural Student Success<\/a> invite you to celebrate your freedom to read with us at a number of engaging events celebrating this year\u2019s theme for Banned Books Week, \u201d<\/span>Diversity<\/a>.<\/span>\u201d Every year, the American Library Association\u2019s Office of Intellectual Freedom releases a list of the <\/span>top ten most challenged books<\/span><\/a> of the previous year. According to the Office of Intellectual Freedom, nine of the ten most challenged books from 2015 include <\/span>diverse<\/span><\/a> content. \u00a0We are particularly committed to discussing the importance of access to diverse reading material this year as <\/span>we engage with and support<\/span><\/a> the conversations generated by the University\u2019s <\/span>Speech and Race Action Plan<\/span><\/a>. We agree with what Carla Hayden, <\/span>newly appointed<\/span><\/a> Librarian of Congress recently stated in a <\/span>PBS interview<\/span><\/a>, \u201cChildren need to see themselves reflected in books. Books can be mirrors, and they can be windows.\u201d \u00a0Access to diverse content is important for all readers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Start off the week with a visit to our information tables to learn more about why books are challenged, make banned books buttons, check out banned books, enter our raffle to win one of three copies of this year\u2019s most challenged books, and share why banned books matter to you!<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, on Friday, join us as we welcome Chicago\u2019s City Lit Theater<\/a> for Books on the Chopping Block<\/a>, a sixty minute performance of selections from the ten most challenged books of 2015, including Fun Home<\/em>, I am Jazz<\/em>, Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>, and The Holy Bible<\/em>. Raffle, refreshments and Q&A to follow performance.<\/span><\/p>\n
