Drawing on examples of traditional censorship, silencing of unpopular opinions, and recent efforts to limit open access to information collected by the federal government, LaRue will challenge us to honor our fundamental commitment to the First Amendment while supporting an environment in which challenging ideas, and differing opinions, may be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1967, the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom provides information to individuals and organizations facing intellectual freedom challenges; plans and promotes initiatives that promote intellectual freedom, privacy and free access to information (including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bannedbooksweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Banned Books Week<\/a>); and, works closely with others, including the ALA Washington Office, on core <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/advleg\/federallegislation\">information policy issues<\/a>. The DePaul University Library has collaborated with the OIF on <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/bannedbooks\">Banned Books Week<\/a> programming for several years, and received a grant from the Freedom to Read Foundation in 2014 to support a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2014\/09\/15\/are-you-a-rebel-banned-books-week-events\/\" target=\"_blank\">panel discussion<\/a> of the banning of comic books and graphic novels, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/cbldf.org\/banned-challenged-comics\/case-study-persepolis\/\" target=\"_blank\">challenge to using <em>Persepolis<\/em> in Chicago Public Schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sound of Silence\u201d is presented as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/offices.depaul.edu\/diversity\/action-plan\/Pages\/calendar.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">President\u2019s Series on Race and Free Speech<\/a>, and is open to members of the DePaul University Community. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/the-sound-of-silence-tickets-31328032990\" target=\"_blank\">RSVP<\/a> is required.
