Illinois residents who are recipients of the Spectrum Scholarship may also receive a grant from the Sylvia Murphy Williams Fund, given by the Illinois Library Association. Lansdown, who recently completed her M.Ed. in School Counseling from the DePaul University College of Education, was named a “Giles Scholar,” recognizing the contributions made to the Spectrum Program by Louise Giles, President of the Association of College & Research Libraries from 1975-76. Lansdown joins her colleague in Access Services, April Hummons, as a recent Spectrum Scholar from DePaul, and will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Lansdown, who has been a library student employee for almost 7 years, plans to pursue a career in youth services librarianship, where she will be able to bring her expertise in counseling psychology and working with young people to the public library environment that she sees as essential to student success in diverse communities. As she says: “Issues of equity, inclusion, representation, and access are at the forefront for me in actualizing social justice in librarianship. I believe public libraries can disrupt systemic oppression and this is similar to how I view school counseling work which, at its core, seeks to level the playing field for students to achieve their goals.”

During her time at DePaul, Lansdown has not only brought the university’s commitment to social justice into her work, but has seen herself as “a resource for students of color on campus” who can have an “impact on communities through the work of librarianship.” These commitments are evident in her vision for her future in the field: “As a librarian, I want to nurture the holistic development of youth through innovative programming such as transforming book clubs into healing spaces by using bibliotherapy to address trauma, and collaborating with community partners to make libraries integral in the fight against food deserts in low-income neighborhoods.”

The DePaul University Library maintains an active engagement with professional education programs in the state through the provision of field experience opportunities in areas such as special collections and archives, digital preservation and reference and instructional services, and several of our staff members have pursued graduate degrees in Library and Information Science as part of their professional development.

Kristin Lansdown, Student Circulation Supervisor in the DePaul University Library’s Access Services Department, has been named a Spectrum Scholar for 2017-18 by the American Library Association.
