They have been sharing their perspectives as first-year students and new users of University Library services in a series of career skill-building projects this year. Read on to find out what they have planned to celebrate National Poetry Month!<\/em><\/p>\n

When most people think of April 1st, April Fools Day comes to mind. However, you might not know that April 1st also marks the beginning of National Poetry Month<\/a>, and that\u2019s no joke!<\/p>\n

National Poetry Month is organized by the Academy of American Poets, and began in 1996 as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.\u00a0 Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest literary celebrations in the U.S. According to the official website<\/a>, \u201cNational Poetry Month each April is the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, bloggers, and of course, poets, marking poetry\u2019s important place in our culture and our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The mission of National Poetry Month is to celebrate poets and poetry through a comfortable and friendly lens.\u00a0 This inspired us to select our theme, \u201cShattering the Stanzas,\u201d demonstrating to DePaul students that poetry is accessible to everyone, and hopefully making reading, writing, and performing poetry a less terrifying and intimidating process and experience.<\/p>\n

Our National Poetry Month\u00a0 theme fits the mission<\/a> of the DePaul University Library, \u201cto cultivate and sustain the intellectual, creative, and social passions of our students, faculty, and staff.\u201d\u00a0 Our events and activities allow students and faculty to share their knowledge and appreciation for poetry as an art form that can be enjoyed by everyone.<\/p>\n

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Library EDGE 2017-2018 team has planned events throughout the month of April open to everyone.\u00a0 To kick off the celebration, we have an interactive DIY Poetry exhibit in the library where you can make your own poetry with word magnets.\u00a0 DIY Poetry will take place on the first floor of the Lincoln Park Campus John T. Richardson Library from April 1, 2018 through April 30, 2018.\u00a0 Students and faculty can write their own original, or recreate a favorite poem using magnetic words .\u00a0 After you participate, post your DIY Poetry creation on our Snapchat story \u201cDIY Poetry DePaul!\u201d<\/p>\n

To go out with a bang, come and celebrate the art of poetry at the Poetry SpeakEasy Open Mic and Activity Night! The Poetry SpeakEasy will be held in the Student Center Room 220 on April 24, 2018 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. There will be free coffee and desserts! \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

During the Poetry SpeakEasy, students and faculty can come share their own poems or read their favorite poems. If you are not comfortable reading to a crowd, then do not worry! You can stop by and create a poem with the word magnets or just listen to the performances while enjoying free coffee and desserts. You can also check out a poetry book from the pop-up shop that will be open during the event!<\/p>\n
