The Society of American Archivists<\/a> offers publications and other resources for learning about archives. <\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

While October may conjure up apples, pumpkins, and falling leaves for most people, October is also the month when archival organizations in the United States celebrate and promote their collections and services.\u00a0 DePaul University Special Collections and Archives<\/a> (SPCA) is pleased to offer several events in October and we hope that you find a moment to drop in and learn more about our University Archives, local history and community activism collections, and the DeAndreis-Rosati Memorial Archives (Vincentian archives). On average, we host 900 researcher visits in our reading room each year and nearly 1500 students and community members attend instruction sessions and outreach events annually.\u00a0 Our digital collections<\/a> and special projects<\/a> sites are another way to explore historical materials at your own convenience.<\/p>\n

Upcoming Events:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

October 18 – Fifty Year Club Luncheon (Office of Alumni Relations)<\/a>.\u00a0 Offered as part of Alumni and Family weekend, the luncheon welcomes and celebrates members of the Class of 1969 and earlier.\u00a0 Special Collections and Archives staff will be at the luncheon with DePaulian yearbooks and posters of historical photos, newspaper headlines, and other materials that rekindle memories of campus life for earlier generations of DePaul students.<\/p>\n

\"Illinois<\/a>
Chicago Area Archivists<\/a> has partnered with the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board<\/a> and the\u00a0Illinois State Archives<\/a> to produce this poster for Archives Month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

October 18 \u2013 Open House for Alumni and Family Weekend<\/a> (2:00 \u2013 4:00).\u00a0 Visit Special Collections and Archives (Richardson Library room 314) to see two ongoing exhibits.\u00a0 Voices of Protest \/ Voces de Protesta<\/a> features contemporary protest art in both silkscreen and poster print formats, covering a range of topics including immigration rights, reproductive rights, and the fight to end poverty. \u00a0Chicago 15<\/a> commemorates the 1969 peace action in which more than 40,000 Selective Service records from Chicago\u2019s South Side were destroyed in order to disrupt the disproportionate flow of African Americans drafted to the war effort in Vietnam.\u00a0 \u00a0Highlights from our archival and rare book collections will also be on temporary display with staff available to answer questions.<\/p>\n

October 22 \u2013 History Fair Kickoff<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Special Collections and Archives staff will join area archivists and educators at a resource fair at the Chicago History Museum to showcase our collections and speak with teachers about their students\u2019 History Fair<\/a> projects. \u00a0A number of high school students choose our materials for their research each year, especially for projects on the Young Lords, Teresa Fraga, and Mujeres Latinas en Accion.<\/p>\n

October 31st<\/sup> \u2013 Halloween Open House (11:30 to 2:00). \u00a0In honor of Halloween, SPCA will display some of our most startling holdings like historical accounts of ghosts and witches, spooky Victorian parlor games, exorcism manuals, and gothic novels.\u00a0 Please drop in to suite 314 of the John T. Richardson Library anytime between 11:30am and 2:00pm to view our eerie displays \u2013 if you dare!<\/p>\n

Feel free to visit SPCA any time of the year in suite 314 of the John T. Richardson Library during our open hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
