The \u201cuseful\u201d component of the query is further complicated by the circumstantial connection of knowledge to social, political, or economic environments and the fact that existing knowledge creates new knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-860\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-860\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Chirurgie_Encyclopedie1790-204x300.jpg?resize=375%2C552\" alt=\"Plate from Encyclopedie methodique, Chirurgie\" width=\"375\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Chirurgie_Encyclopedie1790.jpg?resize=204%2C300&amp;ssl=1 204w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Chirurgie_Encyclopedie1790.jpg?w=543&amp;ssl=1 543w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plate from Encyclopedie methodique, Chirurgie, [1784].<\/figcaption><\/figure>The European movement known as the Enlightenment is widely considered the initial impetus toward a modern examination of knowledge.\u00a0 Beginning in the late 17th century, intellectuals sought to reform society beyond traditional or superstitious explanations with an emphasis on reason and scientific method.\u00a0One of the crowning achievements was the 35-volume <em>Encyclop\u00e9die<\/em>.\u00a0 Compiled and published over the course of twenty-one years (1751-1772), the <em>Encyclop\u00e9die <\/em>was seen as a way to publicly capture and disseminate the world\u2019s knowledge ranging from philosophy to science to commerce and for the first time, the mechanical arts.<\/p>\n<p>These new intellectual developments soon spread to urban centers across Europe and to Britain\u2019s American colonies in part due to the acute curiosity of Benjamin Franklin. Quick to see the benefits of dispersing useful knowledge through every means possible, Franklin was a force behind the colonial establishment of intellectual gatherings and information exchange in the colonies. The diffusion of useful knowledge became a cultural movement as well as the namesake of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>A new exhibit titled <a href=\"http:\/\/dpuspecialcollections.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/diffusion\">Diffusion of Useful Knowledge<\/a> looks at some of the intellectual movements and social organizations that sought to define and promote \u201cuseful knowledge\u201d spanning the late 18th century through the middle of the 19th century.\u00a0 While many of the methods used to convey knowledge, such as encyclopedias, lectures, and a variety of educational publications, are still widely in use today, the question of \u201cwhat\u201d makes the knowledge worth pursuing continues to evolve.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is viewable through December 2014 in Special Collections and Archives in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.depaul.edu\/campus-maps\/buildings\/Pages\/richardson.aspx\">John T. Richardson Library<\/a>, Room 314.
