One of the early lessons for the library was the realization that students who cannot afford to purchase course materials have become even more vulnerable. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">In the past, these students have relied on borrowing physical copies of books through I-Share, checking out books on physical reserve in the library, or sharing course materials with classmates\u2014options that are not available to students this quarter. Financial stress may be compounded with the loss of employment income for some students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Please remember to consider alternative course materials as you move through spring quarter, and as you plan for your summer and fall courses. Supplementing or replacing required course materials with open educational resources (OERs) and library licensed resources is an effective way to help defray expenses for students and support them in their learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Where to locate OERs<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOpen Educational Resources are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium \u2013 digital or otherwise \u2013 that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>~The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">There are several large collections of OERs which can be good starting points to search for relevant materials by subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/subjects\"><span class=\"s4\">OpenStax<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">: Explore peer-reviewed books published by this nonprofit based at Rice University.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/blog\/teaching-online-openstax-support-emerging-social-distancing-requirements\"><span class=\"s6\">OpenStax blog post about teaching with their resources during the pandemic.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/textbooks.opensuny.org\/\"><span class=\"s4\">Open SUNY Textbooks:<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> This collection was established at the State University of New York Libraries. Statistics on the number of downloads per book are a useful feature of this site.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\"><span class=\"s4\">Open Textbook Network Library<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">: Based at the University of Minnesota, the OTN currently hosts 700+ open textbooks in their growing library. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Additional repositories of open materials can be found on the library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.depaul.edu\/openeducation\"><span class=\"s7\">Open Educational Resources guide<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trial OER database:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/go.openathens.net\/redirector\/depaul.edu?url=https:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.aspx?authtype=uid&amp;profid=eds&amp;groupid=main&amp;user=faculty_select&amp;password=!kjljaa1\"><span class=\"s7\"><b>Faculty Select<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s2\">The library has a trial to the EBSCO Faculty Select database. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Use this database to search and access quality open textbooks, Open Educational Resources (OER), and discover unrestricted library e-books from top academic publishers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">*<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>DePaul <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/about\/contact-us\/staff-directory\/liaisons\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><span class=\"s7\"><b>Liaison Librarians<\/b><\/span><\/a><b> are available to help you locate open materials.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Library-Licensed Resources<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The library offers many licensed resources that can also be used to supplement open course materials for online courses. Explore the following collections for e-books, videos, articles, and images.
