The DePaul University Library is teaming up with the University Center for Writing-based Learning<\/a> in celebration of Banned Books Week.<\/a>\u00a0Events ranging from banned books read-outs, button making and “pop-up shops” run Monday September 28 to\u00a0Friday October 2. \u00a0We’re especially excited to partner with City Lit Theater for\u00a0a performance titled “Books on the Chopping Block.”<\/p>\n

Books on the Chopping Block<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Friday October 2,\u00a02:00pm-3:00pm, \u00a0Program\u00a0Room\u00a0115\u00a0John T. Richardson Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBooks on the Chopping Block\u201d is a 60 minute performance of dramatic readings of short excerpts taken from the ten most challenged books of 2014.\u00a0 This year\u2019s performance will feature excerpts from\u00a0Persepolis<\/em>\u00a0by Marjane Satrapi,\u00a0The Kite Runner<\/em> by Khaled Hosseini and\u00a0The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian\u00a0<\/em>by Sherman Alexie among others. There will be time\u00a0after the performance\u00a0for Q&A and light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n

Celebrate your freedom to read at our banned books read-out, info table and \u201cpop-up shop\u201d in the DePaul Student Center!\u00a0Join members of the DePaul community as they read aloud passages from banned books. \u00a0Browse our selection of subversive titles and check out one to take home\u2014some titles may surprise you! Stop by and\u00a0create a Banned Books Week button and enter\u00a0a raffle to win a tote bag and a copy of this year\u2019s most challenged title,\u00a0The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian<\/em>\u00a0by Sherman Alexie.<\/p>\n

Also visit our ongoing exhibit, “Banned, Censored, Challenged: Reading as a Subversive Activity<\/a>” on the 1st floor of the\u00a0John T. Richardson Library. \u00a0This exhibit features books from DePaul Library\u2019s collections that have been banned, censored or challenged in a variety of contexts.<\/p>\n
