Near the beginning of Savage Park<\/a>,<\/em> Amy Fusselman describes a swimming demonstration at her children’s New York City day camp.<\/div>\n

“There were eight plastic orange chairs stationed around the pool\u2026In each of these chairs, a lifeguard sat and watched a group of six to eight children as they worked with another lifeguard in the water. There were never fewer that two lifeguards – one watching, one teaching – per group.”<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Fusselman uses the anecdote to demonstrate\u00a0the extent to which children’s play\u00a0in the United States is choreographed and controlled for the sake of safety. \u00a0In stark contrast, the author and her small children encounter “Savage Park,” a nickname for Hanegi Playpark, located in Tokyo. Hammer and nails, scrap lumber, and a fire pit are\u00a0available for use by children of all ages, under the gentle guidance of Noriko, the park’s play facilitator. \u00a0More than simply\u00a0an exploration of cultural differences,\u00a0Savage Park\u00a0<\/em>examines the American obsession with safety and security, and how it may be a symptom of our fear of mortality. \u00a0With Noriko’s help, Fusselman learns to allow a little more danger (and creativity) into her\u00a0own and her children’s lives.<\/div>\n

It is difficult to imagine a more iconic image of American life than Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom from Want,” part of the\u00a0Four Freedoms<\/em>\u00a0series of paintings appearing on the cover of\u00a0The Saturday Evening Post<\/em>\u00a0in the year 1943. In it, nine members of a family are seated at a dining room table, leaning forward in gleeful anticipation as\u00a0the grandparents\u00a0present a sumptuous\u00a0Thanksgiving turkey. \u00a0Wildly popular at the time, the image was\u00a0later critiqued as portraying\u00a0American over-consumption, and even national Puritanism, since the family had\u00a0only water\u00a0in their drinking glasses.<\/p>\n

By the counter cultural 60’s, Rockwell was dismissed by some critics as trite and sentimental. However, luminaries of Pop Art such as Andy Warhol, who purchased two of his works, were genuine admirers. Warhol even credited Rockwell as a \u201cprecursor of the hyperrealists.\u201d \u00a0As Deborah Solomon\u2019s biography, The American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>shows, the man himself was as nuanced as his artistic legacy.\u00a0 A patriotic champion\u00a0of the Boy Scouts and American-style democracy, Rockwell\u00a0was also a supporter of racial equality and what we would today call multiculturalism. \"Hallucinations\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As a child, author Oliver Sacks experienced a disorienting and frightening visual hallucination. He saw
\nbrilliant bands of jagged light in one field of his vision which expanded to include a blind spot. His
\nmother, a physician and fellow sufferer, explained the phenomenon of pre-migraine auras to him,
\nreplacing his fear with a lifelong curiosity about sensory hallucinations.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Some of the content in Hallucinations\u00a0<\/a><\/em>is disturbing, such as a chapter about the\u00a0bizarre hallucination of seeing one’s own double. \u00a0However, Dr. Saks is mostly reassuring, letting us know that seeing and hearing things is not necessarily an indication of mental illness. In fact, hallucinations\u00a0may be caused by conditions as disparate as blindness, epilepsy or emotional trauma. He shared his own experience of hallucinating after being\u00a0badly injured in a hiking accident. In extreme pain, and struggling to cross a stream, he succumbed to the desire to give up. \u00a0A firm voice told him “You can’t rest here–you can’t rest anywhere.
