{"id":9946,"date":"2021-01-07T11:00:48","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T17:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/?p=9946"},"modified":"2021-01-07T11:00:48","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T17:00:48","slug":"new-years-resolutions-2021-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2021\/01\/07\/new-years-resolutions-2021-style\/","title":{"rendered":"New Year\u2019s Resolutions, 2021 Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year again for making healthy resolutions, and I\u2019ve gotten into the habit of looking to Special Collections and Archives materials for inspiration.\u00a0 Two years ago, I looked for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2019\/01\/16\/new-years-resolutions-reconsidered\/\">fitness tips from our Victorian-era sporting books<\/a>. \u00a0Last year, I suggested we could learn from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/2020\/01\/08\/turning-to-fitness-in-the-new-year\/\">Turnvereine<\/a> and add beer and politics to our exercise routines.\u00a0 This year, with working remotely, I haven\u2019t had the same access to our rare books and archives. Of course, in their off-duty lives, librarians exercise like anyone else \u2013 walking, swimming, running, fitness classes, etc.\u00a0 But did you know that special cadres of librarians train with the most undervalued of occupational exercise equipment?\u00a0 That\u2019s right. Book carts.\u00a0 Book carts can hold nearly 400 pounds and yet they turn, swivel, and glide with ease with the proper guidance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9948\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/book-cart-drill-team.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9948\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/news.library.depaul.press\/full-text\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/book-cart-drill-team.jpg?resize=217%2C181&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Book Cart Drill Team World Championship promotional image\" width=\"217\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Promo for the World Championship Competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Library supplies company DEMCO sponsored the first Book Cart Drill Team Competition in the early 2000s, elevating librarians and their carts out of small-town parades and into the spotlight at state and national conferences. The apex of book cart drill team popularity is behind us now, having peaked around 2010, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/Nfa4Ds\">New York Times<\/a> brought attention to the sport in 2014 and this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3drpEVVKLTY\">book cart drill team entry<\/a> for the Massachusetts Library Association meeting in 2019 is not to be missed. \u00a0(Watch it. You owe it to yourself.)\u00a0 Or, if you\u2019re still in the Christmas spirit, this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oUi8Z0S7ntc\">San Jose State University King Library<\/a> 2017 routine with live bagpiping is also pretty great. If you want to fall down the rabbit hole, there are plenty of book cart drill team guilty pleasures on YouTube and through a Google image search.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9949\" <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=106561675\">NPR<\/a>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So here\u2019s to all the New Year\u2019s resolutions that keep us healthy and happy, and that bring us together as a library, campus, and community.\u00a0 And let\u2019s raise a toast to the time that we can gather in the library, and that I can get carried away in the stacks of <a href=\"https:\/\/library.depaul.edu\/special-collections\/collections\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Special Collections and Archives<\/a> for next year\u2019s New Year\u2019s
