The Civil War in Art

Harriet TubmanTo commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War, the Terra Foundation of American Art has launched “The Civil War in Art.” The website contains close to 130 high-resolution images contributed by 6 Chicago-area museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago History Museum and the DuSable Museum of African American History. The content for the site was created by two DePaul University professors, Mark Pohlad, Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture, and Margaret Storey, Associate Professor of History.

The site is geared toward middle and high school students, but the zoomable gallery of images, an extensive glossary of terms related to both art history and the war, and a list of additional resources, make this site a valuable resource for those researching or presenting visual material on the Civil War.
