Celebrate National Poetry Month!

This edition of the Full Text is brought to you in part by members of the DePaul University Library EDGE Team, Nora Drew and Angie Vick. They have been sharing their perspectives as first-year students–and new users of University Library services–in a series of projects this year. Read on to find out more about the in-library events they have planned for sharing their love of poetry, all month long!

It’s National Poetry Month! Join DePaul University Library, the Academy of American Poets and Poets.org in the “largest literary celebration in the world…celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.” We have planned a series of month-long activities to show our appreciation for great poetry, great poets, and to let you hone your own poetry-writing skills. Programs include a Poem-a-Day, a display celebrating four incredible American women poets, and a magnetic poetry board where you can write your own poems, all in the John T. Richardson Library.

According to Heather Jagman, the library’s Coordinator of Reference, Instruction, and Academic Engagement (and a poet herself), “Every writing instructor I’ve ever known has stressed the importance of reading, and I think this is especially true of poetry. The more you read, the more likely it is you’ll make an authentic connection to poems that speak to you, and surprise you with new ways of looking at the world. You’ll also begin to understand what makes a poem work, and why. In this way, DePaul University library’s poetry collection supports inspiration and creation.”

We’ll provide the inspiration in our Poem-a-Day posted near the library entrance, featuring a diverse selection of poets—we even tell you where in the library you can find more incredible poetry by each of the authors featured. You can also check out our display of American women poets in the first floor west copy area (near Access Services) for some inspiring lives and words. You provide the creation with your own original magnetic poetry. Look for the magnetic chalkboard near the first floor elevators and once you’ve created a masterpiece, snap a pic of your poem and Tweet it to us @dpulibrarian with #NPM17 #DePoetryofDePaul.

Enrich your day with some poetry in the DePaul University Library!
