In her debut novel, Angie Thomas crafts a story about sixteen year old Starr Carter who witnesses a police shooting of her unarmed best friend. In the aftermath, Starr is torn between the two different worlds she inhabits — the deeply impoverished neighborhood she grew up in, and the upper-crust suburban prep school she attends.
The Hate U Give is the winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the National Book Award Longlist, and is currently being adapted into a film, whose cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Issa Rae, and Common among others.
